Outdoor lighting has to do more than just look good on the day it's installed. It has to survive driving rain, freezing winters, summer heatwaves, garden sprinklers, pressure washing, and years of neglect, while still providing reliable light and keeping maintenance costs at zero.
Right now, the two ratings you'll see on virtually every serious outdoor LED fixture are IP65 and IP67. Both are completely dust-tight and both shrug off heavy rain, but they are built for different levels of water exposure. Pick the wrong one and you'll be replacing fittings far sooner than you planned. So, which one truly wins when it comes to outdoor performance and reliability?

IP stands for Ingress Protection. It is an international standard that tells you exactly how well a fitting keeps out solids and liquids.
Both IP65 and IP67 start with a 6 = completely dust-tight. The difference is the second digit:
One failed seal means water reaches the driver or LED board. That's a dead fitting, a safety risk and an expensive replacement. Specifying the right level the first time eliminates call-backs and keeps clients happy for a decade.
Fully dust-tight and able to withstand water jets. Typical construction: aluminium or polycarbonate body, silicone gasket, stainless clips, tempered-glass or polycarbonate diffuser, multiple sealed cable glands.
Wall-mounted floodlights, soffit downlights, canopy lighting, pergolas, garden walls, signage, car-port strips, high-level warehouse exterior lights — basically anywhere the fitting stays well above ground and isn't at risk of standing water.
Same dust-tight rating as IP65, but with upgraded seals (often double gaskets, potted drivers, or fully encapsulated electronics) that allow the entire fitting to be submerged for short periods.
In-ground uplights, driveway bollards, pond-edge lighting, low-level path lights, coastal promenades, areas with poor drainage, loading bays that get hosed daily, any location that regularly floods.

Most new IP65 and IP67 ranges now ship with microwave sensors, daylight harvesting, Zhaga sockets or full Bluetooth/DALI control — all without compromising the seal rating.
After fifteen years of putting thousands of weatherproof lights through real British winters, coastal storms and everything else the weather can throw at them, our verdict is simple:
Choose IP65 when the fitting will stay dry inside – that's 90 % of wall lights, soffit downlights, floodlights, canopy strips and high-level installations. You get full dust protection, total resistance to rain and jet washing, faster installation and the best price-to-performance ratio on the market.
Only step up to IP67 when the light is low-mounted, regularly splashed by vehicles, sits in an area that floods, or is close enough to the sea for salt spray to be an issue. The extra submersion protection is worth the additional cost in those situations and only those situations.
Whichever rating you need, buy from a manufacturer that actually tests to the standard (not just stickers it on the box) and you'll have bright, reliable light for the next ten to fifteen years with zero maintenance.
Still not sure? Drop us a message with a photo or description of where the lights are going. We'll tell you straight which rating you actually need and quote the right gear the same day – no obligation, no hard sell, just the answer that keeps your installation running perfectly for years.
